Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Modders has done an incredible job with the game since its record release last year. But their latest breakthrough is perhaps the greatest ever.
Tom, aka Warhammer Workshop, Modder in the Back Space Marine 2’s excellent astortes overhaulannounced this week that the release of the 12 Player Co-op and it looks great. Gameplay footage shows multiple players taking on Tyranid Trygon Prime in a battle reminiscent of an MMO boss battle.
This is not something the players thought was possible given that Vanilla Space Marine 2 only supports a cooperative of up to three people. But the mod team not only breaks through that barrier to attacking 12 co-ops, with the support of developer Saber Interactive itself, but also has an epic ambition to turn Space Marine 2 into something even better.
“To be honest, I’m just ecstatic about Saber’s support for the remodeling community,” Tom told Passthecontroller. “None of us expected a 12-player PVE session would be possible any time soon, but somehow we are here. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this enormous leap is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do.”
It is worth pointing out that the mods currently available are merely tests. It’s a test that works well, but it’s still a test. 12 Player Co-ops laugh at the PVE balance of Space Marine 2. This would be expected given that nine players have acquired Tyranid and a thousand sons than Saber designed the encounter.
However, with 12 players now unlocked, Modders is building add-ons to make the most of it. Tom said the team is working on modes like Prop Hunt, PVP Inside Operations and “large” Horde mode updates when the official Horde mode finally launches.
Space Marine 2 Modding has grown into a critical community, with around 20,000 tinkerings on the main Discord server.
“It’s hard to not be excited as a modder and a player,” Tom continued. “As I don’t only make this all possible, I continue to delete my own amazing content, so I have a great deal of credibility in the Saber team, as always, without the usual predatory battle pass nonsense that we take for granted in modern titles.”
It’s generally an exciting time for Space Marine 2, with the aforementioned Horde mode coming soon, with a new class of the work, and of course more control maps and weapons. Saber recently detailed patch 8, reviewed some Horde Mode Mechanics and revealed the maps that are configured.
Space Marine 3 is also under official development This isn’t surprising given how well Space Marine 2 did. And I’m wondering if this 12-player cooperative mod will give us a show of what to expect from the sequel. When Space Marine 3 was announced, they were told to expect “an even more spectacular battle.” That sounds like to me increasing the count limit for cooperative players.
Until we know, modders will exist to make things fresh and interesting, and this latest effort is just the perfect example of that.
