Varjo is Moving Some Advanced Headset Features Behind a $2,500 Annual Paywall

Varjo, a Finland-based manufacturer of high-end XR headsets, has announced that it will be releasing a new paid license structure that includes some of the previous free software features of the XR-4.

Many of Varjo headsets over the years require some kind of subscription, such as a fleet of enterprise-centric XR-3 headsets released in 2020. None However, the need for a subscription.

Currently, Varjo says it is introducing new subscriptions that will affect all new XR-4 and XR-4 Focal Edition headsets purchased after March 25th. This starts with two new tiers: paid subscriptions for Varjo Base and Varjo Base Pro.

Varjo Base is a free software suite that includes core virtual reality and tracking capabilities. Varjo Base Pro, on the other hand, costs $5,000 for paid subscriptions priced at $2,500 per year, or for permanent use.

Varjo Base Pro is a package that includes more advanced mixed reality features, including Chroma Key, 3D reconstruction, and video post-processing, along with enhanced tracking support, programmatic controls, and multi-APP features. In particular, all XR-4 Secure Edition headsets purchased after March 25th will be included with a Pro license.

For $5,990 and $9,990 respectively, both the XR-4 and XR-4 Focal Editions are actually appealing only to the best PC VR Prosumers and Enterprise customers. Anyone who already owns a headset doesn’t have to pay for advanced features. The price hike on “Pro” essentially only affects enterprise users who are in deep pockets.
