Despite potential fans’ efforts, a return is unlikely with Ubisoft’s cuts in its San Francisco branch.
There are plenty of free games available on consoles and PCs, but sadly there are some gems that you won’t notice and will not notice so quickly the plug will pull.
There are games available on PS5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC. Developed and published by Ubisoft. This is the same company, such as Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and is free to play. However, only two days remain before the server is completely shut down.
This Ubisoft Arena Shooter is free to play for the next 48 hours
The game I’m referring to is Xdefiant, a free-to-play shooter from the previous Call of Duty Devs that was released on consoles and PC last year. The game was first launched by millions of players, but due to limited content, it was unable to maintain its player base due to persistent bugs that took too long to resolve, as well as a few other issues.
However, the game’s gunfire, movement and gameplay are all solid and it’s a shame the game’s player base didn’t stick it on for long enough. The announcement regarding the shutdown server occurred in December last year, with the shutdown date being June 3rd. It’s just a few days away (reminder, ComicBook!)
If you have already installed or downloaded the game, you will have time to play it. As someone who spent dozens of hours playing the game, it’s not a bad shooter, but it took more development time to fix some of its annoying bugs.
If you have time, try again with the game before the server shuts down completely on June 3rd. Who knows? Perhaps the fan mods and projects can continue to do it well beyond the server shutdown date, but that needs to be done to raise Ubisoft’s blessing.
One of the main hurdles Xdefiant suffered was the time it took from beta to release. When the beta started, it was silent after meeting at a very positive reception. The developers of Ubisoft San Francisco took almost a year from the beta and eventually released the game on consoles and PCs. At that point, a lot of goodwill and hype had evaporated.
As Ubisoft cuts down a lot of work from the San Francisco branch where the game was created, the possibility of a revival appears to be a problem.
