Fortnite concluded its latest explosive live event, exploding the looming Death Star on the island, and welcomed DC Comics hero Superman in the process.
In tonight’s event, Death Star Sabotage, we saw nearly six million players permeate the Empire’s entirely operational combat stations that horrifiedly hovered over Fortnite Battle Royale Island throughout the Star Wars miniseason. Fortunately and perhaps not surprising, players were able to stop the station’s fatal space lasers from erasing the game’s map, but not to mention that they didn’t do a bit of damage in the process.
As the destruction rains, the moment of event closure saw Superman arrive. Perhaps to help clean up duties during the newcomer-themed season of the game that starts in just a few hours.
Fortnite’s Big Star Wars event began on the orbit around the game’s Battle Royale Island, with players rarely getting a glimpse of the game’s settings from outside their normal boundaries. The Fortnite setting exists as a reality bubble floating in the multiverse (franchise characters can appear at any time!). If Star Wars: Battlefront 3 wasn’t continuing, this was a fun riff in Space Battle to get things started.
The action then quickly moved into the Death Star itself as Fortnite Heroes Jonesy (Troy Baker) and Hope (Suzie Yeung) guided the intestines of the station, initially leading the players disguised as Stormtroopers and their captives. Eventually, players find themselves in a meeting with the Star Wars Emperor (Sheef Palpatine’s own voice, Ian McDiamid?), and managed to escape the explosive Death Star.
Nodding to Fortnite’s 2021 live event Operations Operations Skyfire (which also ended in the space station exploding on the island of the game), players were initially left to celebrate the victory. And here, one of these chunks shattered straight into the gates of the glowing fissure used by Fortnite’s current anti-hero Daigo to access the realm of Spirit, unleashing its unspeakable power.
At the final moments of the event, players return to the island, with mystical energy crackling around them. (Is this an explanation for why Superpowers exist in the upcoming Battle Royale season?) Meanwhile, Superman is looking at the island from afar, as it is flooded by Spirit Realm energy. Of course, the suggestion here is that Superman swooped to help.

Fortnite will follow up on the first major live events with the launch of a new season on the same day. Following the conclusion of Death Star Sabotage, Fortnite is currently downtime, but will return to Chapter 6: Season 3 in just a few hours. As you would expect from Superman’s arrival, this season will actually be about superheroes. And, as Eagle Eyed Player noticed, this is actually a new version played by David Corrence Sweatt in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. It’s a brand Synergy of some timing!
Fortnite’s Star Wars season is extremely reactive, but we’ve seen some of the game’s lowest players for a while, in response to the bold decision to remove all normal weapons (and all ammunition!) and completely commit to five weeks of Star Wars gunplay. It will be interesting to see how players will rebound at the start of this new season today.
Last week, Fortnite developer Epic Games announced that it will make in-game assets within Star Wars available to creators to build their own experiences in distant galaxies in the not-too-distant future. While fun, tonight’s live event felt in several respects like its showcase, including some sips for fans of the game’s ongoing story.
