Earlier this week, Konami treated classic RPG fans with something special. The franchise has lacked a whole new entry since the Japan and PSP only side story over a decade ago, so expectations for what this entailed was everywhere. So, fans came across the announcement of the Suikoden anime (Yay!) with a rare mix of emotions and finally a new Suikoden video game for mobile (okay, sure!) Gacha Mechanics (oh, no!).
Suikoden: Let’s start with an anime titled Anime. Based on the events of Suikoden 2, this will be the first production of Konami Animation. We still didn’t really know much about what it would look like, nor did we learn more about whether it would be easily accessible outside of Japan. All we got was a short clip of a landscape:
Still, it’s exciting news for Suikoden Diehards and is a tentatively cool entryway for Suikoden newcomers if the anime becomes widely available.
In the second major announcement, fans feel they are a little more conflicted. A brand new game titled Suikoden Star Leap has been announced. It looks really beautiful in the 2D sprite octopus traveler style in a 3D background. It clearly takes place a few years before one person and a few years after the Suikoden 5, and contains 108 traditional characters, just like the other son’s defense attorneys.
However, it has been released on mobile. And for now, there seems to be nothing else. That alone may not stop the stubborn fans, but I also learned that Star Leap has Gacha Mechanics and some kind of continuous monetization. This is a rather disappointing inclusion in the game series that has historically existed in premium games released on consoles and PCs, but you need to see if the monetization decision is supposed to be to suppress the player’s ability to enjoy the game and collect all 108 characters.
In the meantime, Suikoden fans can be pleased with the re-release of Suikoden 1 and 2 via Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification War. A new trailer for the collection will also be on display during the live event, and will be officially released tomorrow on March 6th.
