Indie Darling Stardew Valley has been standing there for years. The game is approaching its 10th anniversary and people still love it to this day. When games like this are so old and popular, people start thinking about sequels.
Stardew Valley creator Eric ‘Incernepape’ Barone has those exact ideas, but it’s somewhat at odds with this idea. After all, updating an existing beloved game is easier and a bit more fun than building a new game from scratch!
“It’s all the systems, all the major systems – it’s already all done,” Barone said in an interview with Tigerberry. “That’s not fun. When you do an update, it’s like you know, oh, throw it, throw it, add some green rain.
IGN points out that Barone’s latest game Dev project, Haunted Chocolatier-, is an attempt to diverge a little more. Barone doesn’t want to be known as “Stardew Valley Guy,” and getting out of the shadows of that game is not a small task.
Haunted Chocolatier is something that interests are still working on, and although there is some information on the game’s official website, development is not a quick process. At the time of writing, Haunted Chocolatier has no release date yet.
“Stardew Valley is a big and popular game,” Barone said in the latest update post for Haunted Chocolatier. “I have a lot of attachment to it, and it also gave me this rare opportunity to become an indie game developer, feeling strong obligation and obligation to all those who have bought Stardew Valley over the years.”
Therefore, “letting go” Stardew is difficult to tackle something that is still established and meaningful to people, even temporarily.
Despite his desire to diverge, Stardew’s appeal is hard to ignore. The update looks like Barone is the most comfortable, but the possible sequels are definitely included in the cards.
“To be honest, we might end up making Stardew Valley 2,” Baronne says in an interview with Tigerberry. “It’s much easier to add more to Stardew Valley than to create an entirely new game from scratch.”
When you’re hoping for a sequel to Stardew Valley
Based on existing development timelines, possible Stardew Valley 2 could be far and far away – even if we were on the timeline that would become a real project.
Stardew Valley continues to grow as long as it needs to be, and Barone was able to stick very well to it, as it appears to be a fun option. This is Modders, which adds even more content for players to enjoy.
But there is also a desire for something new. The development of Haunted Chocolatier may not be as fast as concerns hoped, but in fact he wants it to exist in the world. So this is a priority and the oven will take plenty of time.
Only then can we realistically expect Stardew Valley 2 to plant its roots. A long journey? It’s almost certain. impossible? Probably not.
