Outer Worlds 2 devs wanted the sequel to be less ‘one-note’

first The outside world There is a very tight range. According to reviews at the time, the 2019 Obsidian Entertainment RPG “is vast when you need it, but you never fall into a trap that believes that bigger is always better.” You can beat the game in 15 hours if you want – unlike obsidian, for example Radioactive Fallout: New Vegas. But that also meant The outside world“The anti-capitalist satire could be so deep. In an interview at Summer Game Fest 2025, Design Director Matt Singh and Creative Director Leonard Boyalsky taught us how the scope has spread. Outer World 2 – Ideally, the team hasn’t lost sight of what made the first game work.

“First and foremost, we want to make sure it’s an obsidian RPG and that it’s the foundation,” Singh said. “But we had a foundation built from the first game, what aspects we saw are we want to improve? OK, we know how to make an obsidian role-playing game. Ultimately our motto is “Your world.” What we’re really saying is that we value our players’ agents, so you just want to be involved in all of that combat loop.

The important part of The outside world That sense of humor and social satire is what the developer wanted to expand in the second game. “I was really proud of my first game,” Boyalsky told me. “I think it came out really well, but it was small. We were introducing people to the world, so it was like that, so so many — the same jokes, too, too, just a little word.

“Now, we now have a variety of factions,” he continued. “Each of them has their own flavour of humor, so we can either line up those things or have moments of mixing with a lot of darkness — we’re going to be a little more stupid than the first game. That’s like everything here. We’re expanding the whole world.

Each faction has its own motivations and in-game propaganda. One faction called Auntie’s choice is not as sect as corporations. This represents the merger of companies between the two factions in the first game, Aunt Cleo and Spacer choice. And Outer World 2the aunt’s choice is to promote the product, as Singh said, “That’s part of their identity.” Of course, that is expressed through dialogue, but the developers also wanted to find a way to turn the dedication of faction to commercialism into an in-game weapon.

There are results through the Sin. “You can shoot an ad drone to deflect your enemies. And they come out and they just do slogans and stuff, and people say, “What is F? I’m going to run away from me!” But now you can use it as a distraction. That way you can take advantage of taking them out. Or even let them explode as little remote minds that can run around the place. ”

It’s far from the only comedic weapon in the game. “So I had a shrink cree in the first game so I was able to reduce someone to half the size,” Shin said. “I really wanted to finish that gameplay fantasy, and in the second fantasy you shrink to this size” – he lets his fingers move about an inch apart.

“But I wanted the whole game – weapons, we wanted to increase their diversity and make them feel instantly better. Ha.”

Outer World 2 There are more perks than his predecessor. Some of these sound like they’ll lead to very interesting results. “You can take something like that, you can tell the strangest lies and people believe in you,” Boyarsky said. “But if you take that flaw where you force yourself to choose a lie each time, and it just happens to be tied to a skill, it ignores the skill requirements,” Singh adds, “so much fun.”

Outer World 2 It will be released on October 29th on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
