If you can’t get enough open world fantasy RPGs in your life, prepare to add one more. Robert Jordan’s 14-book series The Wheel of Time not only handles television, but also gets video games.
As the development of open world games takes a lot of time, don’t expect the game to emerge for at least a few years, as the concept was only released today.
Wheel of Time games will be developed in-house
In a bold move, Open-World RPGs will not be developed by studios with such gaming backgrounds, but in-house by a new gaming division called IWOT Games. According to Variety, Warner Bros game veteran Craig Alexander will be leading the studio.
The forecast timeline for development is three years and is scheduled to be released on consoles and PCs. The studio is based in Montreal and “leads the interactive entertainment pillar of its multi-platform strategy to expand “time time” across films, television and games.”
Previously Red Eagle Entertainment, IWOT Studios won the rights to Robert Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” book series in 2004, beyond films, television, video games and comics. With the exception of the ongoing Amazon Prime TV show, IWOT Studios is producing multiple projects based on IP, including the action film “Age of Legends.”
Just as most brands go across a variety of entertainment mediums, expect TV shows to connect to games and movies. Rick Selvage, CEO of IWOT Studios, confirms that “there is a lot of continuity in how we approach our TransMedia strategy.”
Selvage wrote in their statement, “It’s an open world game, and it’ll be everything about “Wheel of Time.” Everything that is covered in the book, and all the backstory elements of it. ”
As for who is in the main development, Craig Alexander was previously vice president of product development for Warner Bros. Games. Alexander’s projects include the MMORPG “The Lord of the Rings Online”, “Dungeons & Dragons Online” and “Game of Thrones” mobile games.
“Adapting such legendary myths to open world RPGs is an unusual and ambitious challenge. It takes a vision, scale and a vibrant creative environment. All of this is provided by Montreal.
It will probably take some time to see something about the project coming to fruition. Good luck, Alexander and other IWOT games! You can’t have enough open world games, right?
If you’re looking for an open world RPG to play now, Bethesda just shadowdrops Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which was remastered today on consoles and PC.
