New Tobii Partnership Paves the Way for Next-gen Eye-tracking Tech in XR Headsets

Tobii, an eye-tracking company, has announced that it has partnered with Prowsee to develop the next generation of gaze tracking for AR/VR headsets and smart glasses.

In short, Propesee manufactures specialized cameras and sensors that function like the human eye. Instead of recording everything like a standard camera, its technology captures only changes such as movement and light changes, making it faster, more compact and more important power efficiency. The application includes self-driving cars, industrial machines and smartphones, but also includes smart glasses with the help of XR headsets and Tobi.

The collaboration is said to combine Tobii’s industry-leading eye-tracking platform with prophecy’s event-based sensor technology. This states that companies can “develop ultra-fast, power-efficient eye tracking solutions.”

“Event-based vision is perfect for the growing demand for low-power, always-on sensing in the next generation of wearable devices,” said Luca Verre, co-founder and CEO of Propesee. “This partnership builds on a strong foundation of collaboration between teams, expanding collaboration capabilities into the gaze tracking space. Tobii’s proven leadership, combined with her experience in event-based sensing, aims to set new standards for what is possible with AR/VR and smart eyewear.”

Emma Bauer, Senior Vice President of Integration at Tobii, calls the smart glasses “one of the most demanding segments for eye tracking.”

“By partnering with the Prophet, we add event-based sensors to complement existing camera technology, providing customers with even more options and flexibility when designing products,” says Bauer.

Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Tobii is one of the first companies to supply consumer VR headsets with slim and effective eye tracking modules as an eye-opening global leader, allowing for things like freed rendering, social VR immersion, and visual impairment of automatic patient distance (IPD) visual impairment (IPD).

Today, many modern headsets have Tobii Eye Tracking technology, including the PlayStation VR 2, Pixel Crystal, Play for Dream Mr, and the 2019 era HTC Vive Pro Eye.
