Meta’s Next Headset is Reportedly Thin, Powerful & Uses a Puck-style Compute Unit, Coming in 2026

According to Wall Street Journal Report, Meta may be looking for some of Hollywood’s top brands and creating exclusive content for the next XR headset.

Citing people familiar with the issue, Meta recently discussed with many entertainment brands, including Disney, A24 and small production companies, creating both episodes and standalone immersive videos tied to famous IPs.

moreover, WSJ The talk includes the possibility of timing exclusiveness, allowing producers to sell on other platforms after a specified period.

Meta is said to be hoping to use video to attract users to the company’s next XR headset.

Codenamed “loma”, the headset is said to have a design similar to glasses that connects to pocketable computing packs, which are said to be more powerful than the Quest 3 series headsets. WSJ Report Meta shows the device priced under $1,000.

If the report is true, this marks a sharp departure from the company’s current quest headset, cramming all components into a single standalone unit. Outside of Quest Pro, which was primarily considered a commercial failure, the company is also increasingly focusing on $650 hardware. The latest Quest 3 is currently at a low price of $300.

I’ll talk WSJ, Meta says it’s always developing multiple headset prototypes. Either way, shopping for exclusive content deals suggests that something substantial is going well.

Another report from uploadvr Additionally, the code names, called “Pismorow” and “Pismohigh” for Meta’s Top Quest 4, have been cancelled. It is reportedly expected that Quest 4 would land next year. Rumors recently proposed by the respected VR leakage device Luna suggest that Quest 4 is in favor of the new design mentioned above in 2027.

In particular, Meta CTO and Reality Labs chief Andrew Bosworth said last December that wireless pack units for complex reality headsets like Quest are not “magic bullets.”

“We’ve seen this many times. The wireless computer pack doesn’t really solve the problem. If it’s wireless, then you have a battery in the headset. This is the main driver of weight. And certainly, performance can be potentially good, but it’s a bit limited because you use a bandwid, but because you use the radio.

In the meantime, XR landscapes have always moved towards all types of thin, light hardware, with Warby Parker and gentle monsters releasing from PC VR headsets such as Bigscreen over two to smart glasses that offer built-in head-up displays, including Google’s upcoming Android XR-powered glasses. Widely reported rumours of Meta’s next-generation smart glasses and Apple’s upcoming smart glasses will also persist.

At least for bulky XR headsets, removal of weight is expected to reduce user friction and significantly increase long-term involvement.
