The issue with VRR Hiccup has affected games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and The Last of Us Part 2.
Yesterday, Sony released a minor system update for the PS5. This is the same type of patch that you normally receive, even during PS4 generation, with built-in stability improvements.
However, there was one major thing yesterday’s PS5 patch applied what Sony didn’t specify in Changelog, and fixing a VRR (variable refresh rate) issue, which has been going on for several months.
The released PS5 update was versions 25.04-11.40.00. So, when the console firmware is displayed with that number, it will be set all.
New PS5 firmware update finally solves VRR issues
The official Changelog for Sony’s PS5 system update mentions that “Improved messaging and ease of use on some screens,” but this has also been confirmed to fix issues with VRR.
The Digital Foundry tech guru said Sony contacted them to make sure the patch was dealing with VRR issues carefully. “As some have already detected, the latest PlayStation firmware resolves the VRR Hiccup issue. If we find a spare moment, we’ll test it,” the outlet confirmed.
The PS5 community had already found this fix before Sony confirmed it. For those new to this VRR Hiccup, it was a problem around the same time that the PS5 Pro was released last year. I was playing the game at an unlocked frame rate that affected players with VRR active and hadn’t reached 60-10 frames per 60-120 frames. For games hovered around the 70-90 FPS mark, these titles were affected, but titles close to 60fps or 120fps were not affected.
Some of the games affected by this issue include Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, The Last of Us Part 2, and Horizon Forbidden West.
It took Sony several months to resolve this issue. This could mean that it is a more important technical hurdle than initially thought. What’s strange here is that it’s not mentioned in the patch notes. Was it the mark of Sony’s victory column, unless you want to emphasize the issue in the first place?
At least those who suffered framerate hiccups due to VRR have solved the problem. You’ll likely hear about the next major PS5 system updates that will add new features before the year comes out, and we’ll let readers know if you know more about it.
