Three screenshots of the Mario Franchise’s unreleased virtual boyout have resurfaced online, making it the best thing to see the game I’ve seen since 1995.
The image was discovered hidden in the internet archives by Bluesky user Rabidrodent, especially in a folder of video game screenshots drawn from an old AOL file library. They appear to be official assets distributed to the media by Nintendo. It seems like no one has seen it before to use it to report games. That said, this is probably the first time these particular images have been made available to the public for the first time in decades, and we love to see them.
Nintendo showed “VB Mario Land” because the game is colloquially known, despite never receiving its official name once at the winter appliance show in January 1995. Reports at the time show that attendees were unable to actually play the game or watch it through the virtual boy, but they were shown a first level demo on Wyden TV while wearing Wyde Clean TV.
VB Mario Land You’ve seen Mario crossing both side crawls and top-down levels. Virtual Boy Warioland. It’s unclear why Nintendo didn’t release the game, but it’s one Nintendo console to help many lose the virtual boy’s near-disabled failure and keep the strange device from receiving the traditional Mario experience.
