Luckily for me, most games throw a visual countdown lifeline to explain oxygen levels, and (1) I surface in time and (2) avoid hyperventing stress that emerges in time. You are already in a spacesuit, but the challenges you encounter via an underwater scooter require a lot of time-consuming back and forth. I spent too long looking for a route out.
