It contains ESIM! Switching from physical SIM to ESIM is a comprehensive good move for many iPhone users as it offers great security, flexibility and durability. They’re all all digital, so if that’s a feature you cherish, it makes switching between multiple phone lines much easier. Also, replacing your carrier with ESIM is a scinchi, allowing you to easily set up a new international call plan while traveling. Even if there’s a reason to have to switch to ESIM, I’ll write down the iPhone that supports this feature and how to activate it.

Which iPhones support ESIM?

Before converting SIM to ESIM, you need to first make sure your iPhone can even accept ESIM. Fortunately, all modern iPhones support ESIM, so most users are unlikely to face problems. However, to be safe, the following is an overview of how the iPhone supports this technology:

Single EG iPhone

These iPhones support one ESIM. However, you can also use one physical SIM. This means you can technically have two lines if you want. To do this, one must be in the physical SIM and one in the ESIM.

If you need multiple rows via ESIM, you will need to buy one of the phones that support dual ESIM listed in the next section.

Dual ESIM iPhone

With these iPhones you can use two ESIMs. If you want a second line, you don’t need to have a physical card to make it happen either.

Also, since the iPhone 14 only supports ESIM, it’s worth knowing that all models only support ESIM. This means that traditional SIM cards do not have slots. If you think you need a physical SIM card, you should consider an older iPhone or Android that has access to the SIM card slot.

How to convert SIM to ESIM on iPhone

Converting SIM to ESIM should be a simple process, but the iPhone model isn’t just something to consider. You also need to make sure your carrier supports ESIM. All major US carriers offer the option to use ESIM, but if you are using a lesser known carrier, you can contact them and ask about ESIM support before converting SIM to ESIM.

When you’re ready to convert your iPhone SIM to ESIM, go to Settings > Cellular and start.

You will see the blue “Convert to ESIM” option. If this doesn’t appear, it is an obvious indication that your carrier does not support ESIM or will not allow this type of conversion. In the latter case, you will need to call them to see if they can be handled manually and if they can provide you with a QR code.

If you look at “Convert to ESIM” in your mobile phone settings, you’re lucky! Tap this option.

On the next screen, make sure the number listed is the number you want to convert, then “Convert Mobile Plan” followed by “Convert to ESIM” to wrap up the conversion.

This process immediately disables the physical SIM card you used previously. With this in mind, it is best to open the SIM card tray to delete the physical card, then restart your phone.

If you are not planning on going back, you can dispose of your physical SIM card. And even if you want to go back to a physical SIM, don’t forget there’s no way to do it directly from your iPhone. Instead, you need to contact your carrier to handle it.

Conclusion

Converting an iPhone SIM to ESIM has many benefits, so it’s worth the few minutes needed to achieve that. However, if you run into major issues, check out how to access your carrier. Either way, once you drive your SIM off to ESIM conversions, you’re all ready to enjoy a digital lifestyle!
