The Big Switch 2 update of Nintendo’s original Switch has arrived, bringing you a shareable virtual game card, the ability to use game shares in games of your choice later, and a color swap of several app icons. The release notes have many other tweaks embedded, including those that could be a boon for those hoping to sell or offload the original switch before the Switch 2 arrives on June 5th.
If you are expecting to purchase a Switch 2, there is now an option to upload your Switch system transfer data to a dedicated server. The console will then be completely reset. That data can only be downloaded from Switch 2 with a Nintendo account, so don’t continue with this option unless you have already scored a Switch 2 pre-order or are confident in your ability to retrieve it before data is erased from Nintendo’s servers. In other words, Nintendo’s FAQ for this feature states that the original Switch data will be stored for up to one year after the data is uploaded.
To access this option, open the System Settings app and scroll down to the (System) option. Select “System forwarding to Nintendo Switch 2 2”. There is an option that says “Nintendo Switch 2 is not available yet.” Select it and then pay attention to “Download deadlines.”
For those backed up, all games, DLC, users, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and system settings are packaged for upload. News data and Bluetooth settings, as well as time, language, region, and time zones will not be uploaded (at least it’s a simple setting to reconfigure).
