11-bit Studios has announced the Frostpunk 1886, the first game remake scheduled for release in 2027.
The Polish developer is using Unreal Engine 5 for this project. This became clear just over six months after the release of Frostpunk 2. With the first Frostpunk released in 2018, it’s almost a decade, assuming a remake will be announced in 2027.
Frostpunk is a city-building survival video game set in an alternative history of the late 19th century. Building and maintaining cities during the winter of global volcanic volcanic countries, manage resources, choose how to survive, and explore areas outside the city for survivors, resources, or other useful items.
Passthecontroller’s Frostpunk Review returned 9/10. “Frostpunk cleverly mixes various theme ideas and gameplay elements into a engaging, unique, and sometimes unintuitive strategy game.”
Frostpunk 2 did a bit poorly with an 8/10 mark in Passthecontroller reviews. “Thanks to a rethinking of the Ice-Age-Age City Builder Mechanics overview, the large scale of Frostpunk 2 is less intimate, but more socially and politically complex than the original.”
11-bit claimed that it plans to update the Frostpunk 2 with DLC and that it plans to remain for a console launch while working on the Frostpunk 1886.
“The studio’s own liquid engine has long been sought for a new foundation that not only developed the original frost punk, but also developed this war on my part, not under development, but a new foundation to advance the legacy of the first game,” said 11 Bit.
“While Frostpunk 2 continues to move forward with free major content updates, console launches and DLC, this newly announced project marks a return to the franchise roots, evolving the harsh, morally challenging survival experiences that have begun it for both newcomers and longtime citizens in New London.
“But the title Frostpunk 1886 – celebrating pivotal moments in the universe’s timeline is more than just a visual overhaul when a major storm falls over New London. It’s new content, mechanics, laws and perhaps the most exciting – the most exciting, expanding and even the most seasoned players with a fresh experience.
“Frostpunk’s rethinking with Unreal Engine allows the game to become a living, expandable platform, bringing the much-anticipated mod support, with the possibility of adding community requests that were previously impossible to achieve due to technical limitations of the original engine, as well as future DLC content.”
The 11-bit studio said fans were looking forward to a future where Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve alongside each other, each carrying a vision of survival in a merciless cold.”
The studio is also working on The Alters, which is scheduled to be released in June.
