Black Beacon is the latest title from publisher GloHow, which recently launched on mobile devices. This is a mythical sci-fi action RPG with stories of people traveling time to prevent catastrophe and seeing them visit periods of history at different times.
In this world there is a mysterious substance known as beacons. This seems to be against logic. They change size, shape and texture depending on who is observing and how it is observing. What’s consistent is the black colour of their Abyssocals (which gives the game its name) and the fact that anomalies accompany them where they find them.
Throughout human history, the phenomena created by these beacons are considered miracles and revelation, and they worship them as sacred objects. Ancient humans embedded them in obelisks, sealed them under temples, or threw them into stained glass frames.
That’s the lore of the background, but the story of the black beacon picks up that you’re playing a visionary. You are entrusted with keys to the library of Babel. This is essentially an infinite maze that contains all possible permutations of the past, present and future. You will get a vision of a miserable future and set you on your time travel path to prevent it.
To achieve that, you need to gather a team of heroes. It starts with Zero and Ereshan. Ereshan will join you at the beginning of the story. Zero is the mysterious guardian of Babel’s library, with little emotion and no apparent attention to secular events. Ereshan is the granddaughter of the former director of the Babel Library, who was stripped of her inheritance when Zero appeared, which has since led to a chilled dislike.
There is an opportunity to add many other characters to the crew, from the friendly Nanna to the scary Shamash to the elegant viola. More than 10 characters will be available at the time of release, and more may be added in the future.
You can take three characters to meet each battle. You only control one at a time, but you can switch between them on the spot. Each character’s abilities are in their individual cooldowns, so they need to be swapped quickly and efficiently to chain attacks and abilities in fluid combat.
The main story progresses in chapters that are further divided into several stages. Some of it is purely cutscenes, while other chapters are in the battle stage. Both move the story forward and include full voice acting.
Once you complete a stage, you will receive rewards that you can use to improve your characters and weapons. Skillbooks are used to level up characters, each with their own unique ability to level up. When a character reaches a threshold at a certain level, it “breaks through” the threshold and requires a specific item to continue the level.
Weapons have a similar system. Each weapon starts with an innate rarity measured at a star level of up to five stars. You can level up your weapon to a certain threshold, then use the item to “breakthrough” that threshold, power the weapon and increase the star rating.
You can get more items needed to progress your characters and weapons outside the main story, which is available to choose from from the main menu. You can choose to focus on the items and level up, increase your skills, or break through the threshold. Whichever version you choose, you will get a new combat encounter that offers rewards for completion, as well as goals specific to that stage, such as completing within a certain amount of time.
There is also an EX mode that basically works as a tutorial to teach you how to use specific characters and practice spaces. And if you want to take a break and hang out with some characters on your team, you can do it too.
