Oblivion shows that a remaster, which gamers have praised as more than just a remaster, is worth the price.
Just yesterday, Bethesda unveiled and shook the gaming world by releasing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, remastered on consoles and PC.
Most RPG fans may have been looking forward to it ever since it was rumored to be in development, but there is one famous game developer who is not exactly a fan.
Former President of Blizzard Entertainment says old remasters will never keep games like Elden Ring
In a rather surprising move, former Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Ybarra commented on X as “skeptical” of the 20-year-old remaster. He didn’t mention Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion itself, but it’s clear that he was referring to the Bethesda RPG.
“I’m skeptical of the 20-year-old remaster. What was once great, now remastered, can never stand a modern masterpiece like Elden Ring. Ybarra adds that although he thinks he’s not, he “loves to prove you wrong.”
Ibara, former corporate vice president at Microsoft, added that gamers have seen so many remasters because “nostalgia is limited.” Executives acknowledge that he may be wrong, but think the gaming community wants to be “fresher and newer than ever.”
Given that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has skyrocketed to the steam top seller list since its release, Ybarra’s assumption proves to be very false. Mind, this doesn’t even count sales of PS5, Xbox Series X | S, or game pass numbers.
Ybarra’s statement proves how a touch suit is off from what gamers actually want. It’s not a case where gamers don’t want to see remasters or re-releases, but rather about whether these remasters are worth the price or whether they’re shameless cash grabs.
Based on what gamers say about Oblivion’s remaster, it’s a worthwhile re-release, and some people call it a more serious remake than a mere remaster, given how much Bethesda has upgraded to the visuals of the game, gameplay mechanics and more.
