There are reviews for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and it appears that this year’s Game of the Year race is getting tighter.
Clair Obscur is a stylish RPG with hybrid turn-based and real-time combat like Souls, and he really surprised our own Jake Valentine with his reviews, calling it “the frontline of Game of the Year” and “a refined, unforgettable experience of pace.”
He’s not alone as the game has an incredible average score of 91 on OpenCritic and gives him a “Mighty” rating. 96% of reviewers recommend the game.
Clair Obscur: What reviewers say about Expedition 33
The consensus from critics is that Clair Obscur is an impressive debut appearance from developer Sandfall Interactive, which is reflected in the review score.
Michael Highm of Ign gave the game 9/10, particularly praised the game’s combat.
I’m confident when I say that Clair Obscur has one of my favorite turn-based combat systems. It’s already great, even if it has room for growth in a potential sequel.
Eurogamer’s Ed Lightingale gave it four stars, mainly praised the story and its artistic mess.
Clair Obscur’s plot is sensitive to the traumatic themes of death and sadness, but it is also complex and impressive as a mess of colours that will form very slowly as you retreat.
Meanwhile, Josh Cotts of Gamerunt made a better impression of the story with his 10/10 review.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 does a lot from a gameplay perspective, but the story really means something about everything that gameplay is. The story of Claire of Thru, supported by an unforgettable cast of characters and their perfect voice talent, remains long after the credits are rolled.
PC gamer Justin’s betting is more important, making 70% more modest in the game, finding that the combat didn’t land along with him and the other reviewers, and that it was primarily based on memorization rather than strategy.
It’s easy to place your party on regular 9,999 damage (the cap for most of the game). While struggling in almost every boss battle, you will never overcome it by adjusting your strategy. I remembered their animations and wrestled at the right moment every time, so I always won.
Otherwise, Claire’s obscurity is an absolute critical beloved, and appears to have been added to major hits such as the Blue Prince and Split Fiction, along with this year’s Game of the Year pack race.
For now, however, we can wait to see if this critical success will resonate with the player when Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is released tomorrow.
