If there are series that have consistently acquired new games for almost 40 years, then you have to think about how younger generations can play them. That, and of course, thinking about your revenue, has made every publisher increasingly leaning towards multi-platform releases. On top of the PC port, Square Enix has released a remaster and special edition of Nintendo’s handheld-only Final Fantasy series.
The Switch that hits Final Fantasy games is not completely unprecedented. The connection between Final Fantasy and Nintendo dates back to the childhood of the series, when the first game debuted on Nintendo’s Family Com system in 1987. In fact, Square Enix jumped to PlayStation as the primary platform for Final Fantasy 7 before the first six mainline Final Fantasy games debuted on Nintendo’s platform.
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth’s PC launch and solid magic: With the expansion of the gathering that will bring Final Fantasy back to the spotlight in 2025, many hope to jump into the series for the first time. Upcoming Final Fantasy Games on Nintendo Switch
The latest mainline Final Fantasy release is Final Fantasy XVI. This has not yet seen a variant or equivalent release on the switch. Square Enix’s current focus is a three-part remake of Final Fantasy VII, so the new mainline FF game will probably not be displayed on PlayStation or Switch. The Final Fantasy VII remake was released on PS4 in 2020, followed by Final Fantasy VII play on PS5 in 2024, and then advanced to PC.
As some of the biggest final fantasy games of this generation, the big question is whether any of these massive remakes will appear on the Switch. Although unlikely for current Switch consoles, the remake and playback of Final Fantasy VII is rumoured to be part of the Switch 2 release, which we hear more from Nintendo Direct in April.
