The game’s budget has doubled, causing speculation about price increases
Following yesterday’s announcement by Mafia: The Old Country’s 2K game, there’s no $70 price. As this is the standard for most AAA games these days, some may wonder if other games from publishers will follow suit.
Is there a possibility that Borderlands 4, another major release of the year for 2K games, could be cheaper too? Unfortunately, that’s something even GearBox doesn’t know about at the moment.
Borderlands 4 Prices are still a mystery
Borderlands 4 is scheduled to be released in September, but even Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford doesn’t know the price of the game. On Pax East, the studio boss was cornered (via Gamespot).
“I tell you the truth, I don’t know… that’s the truth,” Pitchford shared.
Pitchford said, “It’s an interesting time. At one level, there’s a competitive market that wants to sell as many units as possible, and we want to pay attention to those who are price sensitive.” There are others who embrace the reality that the game’s budget is on the rise. Additionally, retail packages have customs duties. It’s coming out badly there. ”
For Pitchford, the philosophy behind price is to make everyone feel like they’re getting a fair amount from it. “We’ll set a price set right away. It could be a new price led by Nintendo and Microsoft. It might be us coming back. It’ll be the people at the publisher who decides that. We’ll know immediately.
Regarding development budgets, Pitchford confirmed that Borderlands 4 has “more than twice” budgets for Borderlands 3. Hopefully, it won’t reach the $80 mark as I think it’s a price that most gamers aren’t satisfied with.
Just a few weeks ago, the release date for Borderlands 4 rose. Most people assumed they were connected to the Grand Theft Auto 6 release. I know this isn’t the case since then, as the GTA 6 has been confirmed in its May 2026 release, but Borderlands 4 will fire on PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC on September 12th.
Hopefully this pricing conversation isn’t something you need to ask for every game.
