Elden Ring Nightreign enjoys a massive launch on Steam, but the excitement was hurt by a “mixed” user review rating.
The Software Co-op spinoff saw astounding concurrent users at 313,593 peaks on Steam, enough to make Elden Ring Nightrign one of the most played games on Valve’s platform.
But it also comes with a number of negative reviews (67% of reviews so far are positive), most of which point to the lack of Elden Ring Nightleague duo, or to the voice chat with two co-ops.
Eldenling Night Leg Drop players into changing lands in Rimveld and explore and fight for survival in solo or in groups of three. There is no way to play two-player cooperatives.
As explained in Passthecontroller’s Elden Ring Nightrign Review: “Let’s get in the way of the most important caution first: If you’re hoping to tackle Nightreign completely solo, then hardcore Elden Ring players are actively looking for ways to make the difficult game even more challenging. They haven’t patched and adjusted within the first month of release.
in Interview with Igg, director of Elden Ring Nightrine Junya IshizakiNightreign’s lead developers discussed the choice to rely on solos and trios as core experience options. When asked why a pair of players had no option to stop by together without a third player in the matchmaid, Ishizaki said he was overlooked.
“The simple answer is that this was simply overlooked during development as a choice for two players. So I’m sorry,” Ishizaki said. “As I said before, we tried to make this a three-player multiplayer cooperative game. We managed to balance the three players, so that’s the main focus and that’s the core of Nightreign.
“Of course, I understand that myself and often want an era where I play, so this was something I thought of from the beginning,” Ishizaki continued.
“And we’ve put a lot of effort into creating this experience that is playable for solo players as much as the rules and the new system allowed. So, by putting all the effort into that aspect, we overlooked and ignored the aspect of DUOS, which is something we consider as we look at support after launch.”
This means that if you’re playing with your favorite duo partner, you’ll need to accept a random third in the game. Playing Trios is what Elden Ring Nightrign is built for.
Obviously, some players are unhappy with the situation. “The Eldenling Cooperative is, but not really,” reads one negative steam review. “We need three people, but two are not allowed. And why? Because how does this happen? I was so disappointed and thought about a refund.”
“There’s no option for the duo. Random people joined in and random people joined in to do their own thing,” reads another negative review. “Let me duo with my friends…”
“If you don’t have two other friends in voice chat, don’t waste your time,” says another negative review. “The game is Eldenling, but it’s threesome, and the solo cues are terrible (queuing to play randomly). Without a VC it’s very difficult to adjust where to go and where the chests/consumables are. The 1P experience wasn’t as difficult as “Level 1 Eldenling any %speedrun.”
“No matter how good you are at the game, it doesn’t matter if you’re not good at teamwork, especially in an environment where there is no communication (punish the punishment for fast-paced PVE games).
Voice chat issues continue to occur. Here’s another negative review:
“It’s impossible to make progress without voice chat. If you have three friends and you can talk and play regularly, you’ll have a great time, have a smooth connection, the map is full of events, and the game loop is very interesting.
“But I’m a 41 year old man and I don’t have any friends who play this regularly, not to mention the other two (we need three people as a team, but two don’t work either).
“Even if they bring in voice chats in the game (I don’t know what it is at this point), you won’t really enjoy this as if you were trying to fight a peer, as your responsiveness at random will affect your feelings about the game.
“It’s difficult to play a random solo cue. It’s difficult to communicate. It’s difficult to share items. It’s difficult to discuss tactics and decide on the next area to the farm.
“TL;DR, and if you don’t have two more friends, you can group them regularly, but it’s not interesting.”
As Ishizaki suggested in our interview, Duos may add Software’s Dus to Elden Ring Nightreign in the future. Until then, you’re only facing solo or three players.
Ahead of the launch of Elden Ring Nightreign, FromSoftware warned PC gamers that they could experience frame rate drops if they were using “latest graphics cards.”
In a vague note to fans included in Elden Ring Nightreigh’s Day-One Patch Notes, Software said it was investigating the cause, suggesting that affected people would lower their graphics settings from the default “high” to “medium” or “low”, lower the screen resolution and install the latest drivers for the graphics card.
