Speed’s Need Unbound, the franchise’s latest game, received its final live service update, leaving it uncertainty about the future.
Following yesterday’s announcement, not only was the project cancelled with electronic arts, but the layoffs happened again, and EA rocked the x again today, killing another franchise.
This time, it’s a race series that may not be as loved as the need for a speed franchise, but will be overlooked by sports fans.
EA announces “Development Update” to confirm that the Rally series is dead
With a new development update posted by CodeMasters, developers have confirmed that the last content pack in Racing Sim’s “Hard Chargers Content Pack” will be the last. Not only that, but the rally series entitled Dirt before EA acquired Codemaster in 2021 is now officially dead.
“For now, we are pausing development plans for future rally titles. Don’t worry. EA Sports WRC will continue to be available to existing and new players, which will continue to be a source of joy, excitement and the thrill of rally racing.
Our WRC partnership was a kind of culmination for a Codemaster’s journey with decades of off-road racing through titles such as Colin McRae Rally and Dirt. We have tirelessly worked to provide a home for all rally enthusiasts, pushing boundaries and delivering the exhilarating thrill of driving on the tattered edges. We had the opportunity to bring together incredibly talented racing developers, collaborate with some of the sport’s icons, and share our love for the rally,” the studio shared.
This means Codemasters’ Rally Racing franchise is the latest series EA has killed. Over the years, EA has been buying companies one after another, and unfortunately it has also been translated to the publishers who killed the games in these studios when they weren’t doing the way they expected.
The highly-prominent franchises that have essentially died include Dead Space (yes, there was a remake, but no new), Titanfall, Road Rush, Fight Night, Medal of Honor and more.
I hope WRC is one of EA Kill’s final franchises, but I doubt that. The needs of Speed, the other racing franchise in EA, doesn’t seem to work either. The latest entry in the franchise, the speed bound needs, saw the last live service update in February this year. There’s nothing if you’re getting another entry for the franchise.
