Star Wars: Battlefront 2 may enjoy a player’s return, but fans shouldn’t expect Battlefront 3 to be announced anytime soon.
That’s according to a former employee who worked at Star Wars: Battlefront 2 live operations at developer Dice, who answers questions from players on Reddit.
Star Wars: Battlefront 2, originally released in 2017, has seen a rapid rise in player numbers since the beginning of this month, spurring the franchise’s annual May 4th celebration and the critically assumed return of Star Wars television series Andru.
The new popularity of the game calls for fans to want more. And in eight years, you might expect publisher EA to have something on its sleeve. But that’s not true, according to Mats Holm, a former live producer at BF2.
“I don’t think Battlefront 3 will be announced at the end of this rally,” Holm wrote, noting the recent increase in player numbers for Battlefield 2. “But overall, yeah, I think there are people talking about it.”
According to Holm, the biggest problem with holding a new game is that most of the Battlefront 2 teams are no longer dice.
“We’ve spread out all over the place,” Holm revealed. “Some went to Ubisoft. Some got independent and went to Kings, Avalanches, Star-Stable House, Paradox, Star Breeze, Mojang. I gave some examples.
“There are a lot of people in Embark who made the base game, but the people who made the live game didn’t leave it on the pack. We drifted slowly after being placed on the battlefield.”
“Listen to me – there’s no Battlefront 3 now, but Battlefront 2 remasters of future consoles that will arrive in 2027-28,” the developers proposed. “Development time is about 2-3 years. I have a laundry list of improvements this game can get in my opinion, and updating it has always been on my wish list.
“If that’s a success, we’ll start working on 3. We have a team that’s well-versed in the engine, assets, and we can develop 3 in a much shorter time and work on feedback from a fresh Battlefront 2 audience base. This is a five-6 year plan, but it’s a much better chance of success.”
Improvements to Battlefront 2 include all planetary cross-play, day/night cycles, dynamic weather, 1-VS-1 mode, and more, the developers concluded.
“The list is endless, but (these options) were off the table because we were live and not produced (the original game),” the developer concluded.
