CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, codename Project Orion, is a closely guarded secret, but it has not stopped Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith from teasing previously unknown details.
Pondsmith worked closely with CD Projekt on the 30 million-selling Cyberpunk 2077 and was involved in promoting the game ahead of its 2020 release, but was asked about the scope of his involvement with Project Orion at the Digital Dragons 2025 Conference.
In response, Pondsmith admitted he wasn’t that involved this time, but he had gone to CD Projekt to review the script and check out the work in progress.
“Last week I was talking to different departments and wandering around looking at what they had. “Yes, that’s pretty good, it works here.”
And a bite of details about the sequel features a brand new city, in addition to the night city we know from Cyberpunk 2077. Pondsmith described the new city as “it looks like Chicago was wrong.”
“I spent a lot of time talking to one of the guys in the environment. He was describing a new location in Orion because there is another city we visit. I haven’t visited any more cities, but the city at night is still there.
It is worth pointing out here that Pond Miss’ comments do not necessarily suggest that the Cyberpunk sequel will feature future Chicago. It may be Chicago’s views of the future, but it has not been confirmed based on these comments.
There has also been some debate already as to whether the Cyberpunk sequel will expand Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 or if it will have a new version, and if it will expand within playable range. There are many unknowns, but it appears that this sequel has two embodied, playful cities.
The current focus of CD Projekt is Witcher 4, but a new studio is set up in Boston to work with Project Orion. Earlier this year, CD Projekt said that 84 of its 707 staff are working on Project Orion, which is still in the concept phase. There could be a lot of things to change and I haven’t been expecting a game for a while.
There is also a new Cyberpunk animation project on Netflix following the well-received Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. In the short term, the Cyberpunk 2077 is set to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2.
