Confirmed: Mortal Kombat 1 Won’t Get Any More DLC Characters or Story Chapters as NetherRealm ‘Needs to Shift Focus to the Next Project’

Warner Bros. confirmed what Mortal Kombat 1 fans feared after the recent release of the definitive edition. No new DLC characters or story chapters will be released for the game.

Mortal Kombat 1 sells 5 million copies and currently has a franchise of up to 100 million people. Mortal Kombat 11 has become a franchise bestselling game with about 11 million Mortal Kombat Xs sold worldwide shortly after its release. By 2022, the Mortal Kombat 11 had sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Obviously, Mortal Kombat 1 performs less than previous games in the series.

In a tweet on the official Mortal Kombat social media account, Warner Bros. admitted the disappointment the news causes for players.

Warner Bros. failed to say what this new project is, but current speculation points to Infustice 3, a continuation of Nether Realm’s DC fighting game series.

Here is the complete statement:

We are listening to players’ requests for ongoing game support for Mortal Kombat 1. It also continues to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balancing adjustments and modifications, but there are no additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point.

I understand this to fans, but the NetherRealm team needs to shift their focus to the next project to make it as good as possible.

The release of the T-1000 guest character in March 2025 occurred a year and a half after the release of Mortal Kombat 1 itself, but goes down as the game’s final major content drops. For context, in July 2021, NetherRealm announced that it had begun work on its next project (Mortal Kombat 1), resulting in no more DLC for the Mortal Kombat 11. The announcement came two years and three months after the game’s release. Today’s announcement comes one year and eight months after the release of Mortal Kombat 1.

Players have already brought up previous comments from NetherRealm Development Chief Ed Boon. surely, Many people are now pointing out a tweet from Boone in September 2024at the time, fans moved to reassure fans who were already worried that the studio had moved to the next game.

Mortal Kombat 1 enjoyed something like a resurrection in a secret battle with Floyd in JanuaryPink ninja developer Boone has been teasing for years. It sparked the efforts of the whole community that breathed new life into the game. But it was an unusually bright place for its disappointing release for many core Mortal Kombat fans.

What is Mortal Kombat now? Parent company Warner Bros Discovery shows that they believe the Golly Fighting Games franchise has a future. In November, CEO David Zaslav has been working on the game side. The company plans to double the four titles, one of which was Mortal Kombat.. The film adaptation Mortal Kombat 2 is expected to be released later this year.
