When Bethesda was remastered during the release of Shadoped Droped The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, a fellow role-playing game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, we thought there were only most winners. But according to the publisher of Clair Obscur, it wasn’t just an Oblivion do not have Clair Obscur, Clair Obscur, actually benefited from the release of Oblivion, as they increased the excitement of the RPG genre.
Matt Handrahan, senior portfolio manager at Kepler Interactive, says he spoke to the gaming business about the success of the odds launch of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
First, the background. RPG fans faced the difficult choice of spending hundreds of hours on Oblivion’s Cyrodiil or embarking on an expedition to defeat the sedative in Clair Obscur. The launch of two games in the same week sparked both joyous and frustrating reactions from RPG fans, as well as cheeky comments from Kepler Interactive itself.
In a post on X/Twitter, Kepler shared an edited image of Clair Obscur’s character. A humorous nod to the simultaneous release of the film Barbie and Oppenheimer in theaters on the same day in 2023.

Microsoft, who owns Oblivion developer Bethesda and has been focusing on Clair Obscur since it was revealed at the Xbox showcase last year, has also been set on fire for Oblivion, which casts a shadow over Clair Obscur, with both games being Game Pass Day one titles.
However, according to Handrahan, there was nothing to worry about. “We always knew that Expedition 33 had a very specific identity,” Handlerhan said. “When I was in the press, I saw Western-style RPGs and Japanese-style RPGs have completely different charms and viewers. I don’t necessarily play Final Fantasy.
“And by the time we rolled, we were sure we had our own momentum and we could stand next to it. I think there were other aspects that we were doing and that we would include in the price range and game pass. That week we were paying attention to quality RPGs and everyone was thinking and talking about the genre.”
Clair Obscur was a huge hit for Keplar and its French developer Sandfall Interactive, selling over 1 million copies in just three days, and displaying impressive concurrent player numbers on Steam. It’s been very well done that French President Macron praised the development team.
Bethesda announced that Remastered has seen more than 4 million players since its launch, but has not released sales figures. I’ve also seen the simultaneous player numbers for large steam.
The gaming business cited data from Ampere, which shows that 35% of Clair Obscur Player have remastered Oblivion. Much of it relates to both games in the game pass, with the overlap rate of Steam and PlayStation 5 players falling.
