Anyone who’s been playing games on a PC for a long time probably has rough memories of Windows Live gaming.
In 2021, Capcom removed several games using GFWL from the sale of Spear on Steam, including the original version of Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter X Tekken, Operation Resident Vaily: Raccoon City, and the first two Lost Planet Games.
Not all games that used the service were removed, and some were updated to use Valve’s SteamWorks system, like Resident Evil 5, but the other games above remained unavailable.
These unavailable games received updates to remove GFWL (reported by IGN), mainly except for Street Fighter IV, which is replaced by the new Ultra Street Fighter IV, but specifically for the lost planet 2, This removal causes some additional issues and essentially makes the game unplayable.
Cooperative Games Without Cooperatives
With removal of GFWL from Lost Planet 2, The player’s existing saved files are not accessibleThey are forced to start anew, but the online features of the game have also been removed completely.
Lost Planet 2 is primarily a cooperative game, with limited single player modes present, primarily to acquire players in the game world and prepare for multiplayer modes.
At this point, 15 years old at this point, the game’s player base is small but loyal, and after four years of leaving the game to deal with the GFWL, this update clearly hasn’t worked with them.
As one commenter on Reddit wrote, “…Have they removed the online feature in a game intended to be played in an online cooperative?”
Lost Planet 2 was released long before modern style live service games became a reality, but once online features are inevitably shut down, it is yet another example of the ultimate fate of those and other online-centric games.
At least in this case, We hope that SteamWorks integration will make the game and its multiplayer available once moreAs has happened in several other Capcom games, for now, Lost Planet 2 remains a game focused on cooperatives without cooperatives.
