His final attempt didn’t go very well, but this time things may be different.
Jason Blundell, former lead director of Call of Duty’s long-running zombie mode, is currently the director of the new first-party studio, formed at Sony’s PlayStation Studios, and is named Dark Outlaw Games.
He made the announcement in an interview with Jeff Gerstman (via VGC) and said the new company is currently “staffing up” and there will be an announcement about the first game of the future.
Second charm?
Blundell worked at Treyarch from 2006 to 2020, and in 2021 he and Call of Duty veteran Dave Anthony announced they had founded a new studio called Deviation Games and were working on Sony’s “groundbreaking new IP.”
But whatever they were working on never surfaced. Blundell left the deviation in 2022 and after laying off about 90 employees in 2023, the company closed early the following year.
However, he appears to have great hopes for this new venture, describing it as “such privilege” and “humility” and as part of PlayStation’s brand new first-party studio.
“The studio is called Dark Outlaws. We’ve been working in the shadows for a while.
He didn’t say much about what they were making or how long the current projects are being produced, but it’s unlikely that they’re particularly moving forward in development if they’re still growing their staff. However, only time is known.
Rumors have spread about Ex Deduction Developers, including Blundell himself, and it is forming a new Studio for PlayStation in late 2023.
We can only wait for the game we can expect from this fledgling studio, but we hope it will work better than previous attempts, with legendary industry veterans like Blundell and the full party weight of Sony behind them.
Hopefully, if nothing else, they will at least have the opportunity to present anything they have in their work.
