One of the oldest discourses in the gaming field has once again been turned. It’s a question of whether a big single player game is “dead.” Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, who led the development of Baldur’s Gate 3, the hit single-player game, is now putting a strong emphasis on the issue.
Posting on X/Twitter, Vincke said it was “the time when the big single player game was declared dead.” His response: “Use your imagination. They aren’t. They just have to be good.”
It would be hard to deny that Vincke knows exactly what he’s talking about. Larian builds up a game of reputation in the game, creating a starry CRPG like divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 will be delivered before taking the reins at Gate 3 of Baldur, and on all accounts.
Vincke previously made headlines for his brief insights, whether on the Game Awards stage or off. He emphasizes the passion behind development, which respects developers and players and cares about the game. From that point of view, this may not be surprising to see old discourse, but it still reaffirms it.
In fact, 2025 has already seen at least one major single-player hit in the form of Warhorse Studios ‘ Kingdom Come: Derverance 2. There are still months left this year. This is enough time for other single-player games to steal their own spotlight.
Of course, Larian decided to actually leave Gate 3 of Baldur and leave the Dungeon & Dragons. Speaking to Passthecontroller at this year’s Game Developers Conference, the SVP of digital games at Hasbro Dan Ayoub may soon hear more about what’s next in Baldur’s Gate series.
