Confidence in game development has fueled the decision to push the Borderlands 4 release rather than competition.
The CEO of GearBox confirmed that the shift release date for Borderlands 4 has nothing to do with the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, despite all the speculation and rumors that are making the rounds.
It’s rare for video game release dates to move forward, but it’s not unprecedented. If anything, delays are more common. Big companies like Nintendo might shuffle release dates for releases, like they did when they pushed the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 forward and pushed the Splatoon 3 back, but that was the result of a very specific situation.
However, 2025 is a rare year. Because the Juggernaut, the Grand Theft Auto 6, has no release date yet. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has used Twitter/X to confirm that Borderlands 4’s advancement has nothing to do with the fear or knowledge of Rockstar’s upcoming games.
Connection between Borderlands 4 and GTA 6
The reason fans thought the Borderlands 4 shift was suspicious is because of ownership. Gearbox is part of 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, and happens to own Rockstar Games.
The assumption is that Take-Two is moving forward with Borderlands 4 from its first release date, September 23rd, moving away from Grand Theft Auto 6.
Pitchford claims the release date is moving forward due to confidence in the game, but September is still months away, with the game behind with a shorter notification.
Take-Two and Rockstar have not yet provided a solid release date for Grand Theft Auto 6, so Pitchford cannot see the link even if it exists. But in any case, if it means Grand Theft Auto 6 is a September game, then it won’t wait as long as fans fear.
