Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, talks about how he was impressed by the big studio that can handle managing game development. Speaking to PCGAMER, Kingsley talked about the audacity he felt in some of the big games being developed in the studio where 2,000 people are working on them.
The important thing he is paying attention to about these large projects is the required level of organization and management. Speaking about the “organizational level of an organization,” Kingsley believes the scale of these projects could be “mind number bine.”
“Looking at some of these large games, made by a huge team of extremely talented people, “How do you organize the games that 2,000 people are working on that?” Kingsley said. “So, only the organizational level of an organization needs to be crushed. There are layers of organization. There are producers, there are leads, there are discipline leads. But they need to have some layers above it.
“They have to be thrilling, exciting and huge because they cost a lot of money and are incredibly beautiful. But sometimes they’re so big.”
The context of Kingsley’s thoughts on large projects is that they are talking about why studios prefer to keep their games small. He also talks about the audience about the title of the rebellion that is getting older in age demographics compared to famous franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Grand Theft Auto.
“I look at some games and I feel I should, so I start them and you tell me you’ve been playing for 10 hours and you’re 1% of the way you go through the game,” he said. “And you know what you know, I have a family, I have a job to run, and I have errands, I have to clean the house a little. I have something to do, so I can only give a certain amount of time to computer games.”
“So what I really want is a game that gives me a sense of accomplishment and has a vague possibility that I might actually finish it. So it would be really interesting to know what kind of games are actually finished and how many games have been abandoned by the proportion of people. I think it’s an interesting study to do. I think a lot of people have finished our games and come back to play again. That’s my ideal situation to give value to the money.”
The upcoming title of Rebellion is a sci-fi survival game Kniferefaction. The release of PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/s is scheduled for March 27th, but the game will also appear in Game Pass. For more information about the PC version, see the minimum hardware requirements revealed by the studio earlier this week.
