- Sony is trying to adapt video game properties like Astorobot to cinemas and television shows.
- The success of Astro Bot encourages game developers to make smaller games.
- PlayStation Productions is considering the Astro Bot for adaptation following the successful adaptation of other video games.
With the success of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series, Sony is now trying to adapt more of the cinema’s video game properties, or as television shows.
The latest game targeted by Sony? He is nothing more than Astorobot, a multi-award winning platformer.
Astorobot “absolutely” do what Sony wants to do
This latest development on Astro Bot IP was revealed in an interview with Variety by PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash.
Qizilbash shared that he is “absolutely” seeing the possibility that the game will be added to PlayStation’s growing adaptation list. There was no doubt that the massive take Nintendo family-friendly The Super Mario Bros. Movie made it a success and ended the dramatic run at a $1.3 billion box office gross.
So far, there are 10 projects from PlayStation Productions when it comes to adaptation. There are film adaptations such as HBO’s The Last of Us, the Amazon’s God of War series, Horizon Zero Dawn’s Sony film adaptations, and Helldivers 2.
How does PlayStation Productions decide which games will receive treatment for movies/TV shows? Qizilbash said, “For us, ‘OK, we founded one of our franchises as a great game. It’s starting to gain built-in audiences. It’s winning awards.” These are very early indicators for wanting to grow that franchise and grow its IP. ”
“So we’re always looking at it, and I don’t think it’s like awards and nominations that promote it. Sometimes we have an IP that has an amazing story that creators really want to adapt,” Qizilbash added.
While Astro Bot can be seen as a family-friendly film, having a complete film tie-up story might be a challenge, but what do I know? Whatever the plot, it must not feature a lot of gore, as the game was pitched to feature decapitation.
As long as there is quality and care, I have completely managed to see more PlayStation IPs turned into movies and TV shows. Speaking of television shows, HBO’s The Last of Us season 2 is scheduled to premiere later this month, and although it has been confirmed to be a little further from the game, according to game director and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann, that “DNA” is still there.
