Sony is working on a reboot of the new Starship Troopers movie, according to various Hollywood sources.
A Hollywood reporter said District 9, Elysium and Chappy director Neil Bromkamp had signed to write and direct a new adaptation of the Starship Troopers, a 1959 military FI novel by Robert A. Heinlein. Deadlines and diversity backed up the report.
This new Spaceship Troopers film is also not related to the continuation of Paul Verhoven’s cult classic 1997 sci-fi satire Starship Trooper. Rather, it is a new adaptation of Heinlein’s novel, coming from Sony’s Columbia photographs.
News of Bromkamp’s involvement in this new Starship Troopers movie feels baffling considering Sony itself recently announced a live-action film for the hit PlayStation Studio shooter Heldivar. Arrowhead’s Helldivers is heavily inspired by the Starship Troopers of Verhoeven, and among other enemy factions, he sees Cannon’s feed soldiers tasked with defending the super earth regime of fascist satirized from alien bugs.
Sony is currently facing the prospect of new Starship Trooper and Heldivar movies coming up on each other, but a Hollywood reporter said that Bromkamp’s take is not a remake of the Verhoven film, and not a return to source material. Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers is a Heinlein book based on the strong and different tones of films, and many believe it promotes the ideals of film.
Both the new Starship Troopers and Helldivers Movie do not have a release window, so it may take some time to hear and hear from either project. Bromkamp’s final film is Sony’s own Gran Turismo, an adaptation of the simulation series that specializes in driving a long-term PlayStation.
