How to start a fox quest line
The fox is one of Sinbakuf’s final targets. To reach him, there will be a multi-part quest line filled with stealth opportunities, combat and some small political plots, all centered around Obama’s town in the Wakasa region.
Foxes are one of the simpler Sinbakuf targets, but are not available for hunting at first. Learn how to start this storyline and learn how to successfully complete missions that lead to his ultimate defeat.
After this there isn’t much left to clean up before approaching the endgame. Time to see what’s under yet another mask.
How to start a fox quest line
To begin a Fox quest pass, players must complete the mission “Lord of Azuchi,” which is related to Yasuke’s backstory. Once this prerequisite is met, the mission “Red Wall” will be available. I highly recommend that you be at least level 32 before working on this storyline. Enemies encountered throughout the Wasaka region can be extremely difficult.
Once unlocked, open the Shinbakufu screen and select “The Fox” as your next target. The game encourages Wasaka, a coastal region northwest of Omi, to find Nagahid.
Red wall
Use Scouts to find Nagahid and then travel to Obama. From there, head across the river to his property. Once in, prepare to protect him from a group of attackers. Fortunately, Nagahid himself supports the fight, which makes it a rather manageable encounter.
After the fight, you will be given a cutscene. Feel free to roleplay mental content as your responses in the next conversation will not affect the storyline. Nagahid suggests talking to an information broker named Shef Hong.
Chef Hong
Chef Hong was found running an Obama food stall across the river. Playing as NAOE in the evening, he’s much easier to find. Using her parkour skills, she can run across the roof until she finds a distinctive red lantern that adorns the streets of Hon.
Talk to Hong and enjoy your meal while gathering Intel. He offers two more leads. It is a series of attacks on the Niwa family, led by a bandit named Samemaru. No matter how you respond, your choices will not affect your outcome. This interaction unlocks two missions: Smuggler Gambit and revenge, In either order you can complete it.
Smuggler Gambit
Of course, you cannot simply put a waltz into the house of Shamemal and thrust him with your hidden blade. You must first find his secret hideaway. Head north of Obama, then northeast of a small island in Hilga Bay to find a pirate hideaway.
Once inside, stealth is optional, but recommended. Search for two clues. The first is in a building at the west end of the hideout, and the second is in the east house next to the cliff. Read both items and complete this branch of quest.
revenge
Next, we will travel to Tsuraga Castle in Wakasa. It is easy to reach by heading east from the Sotomo Gate. The castle grounds are open to the public, so stealth or violence is not necessary when approaching the nobles who live there.
Keep your eyes on your enemies using ranged weapons as it can do significant damage while being distracted by melee targets.
Talking to Nagahid’s cousin triggers an ambush, which requires protecting the Niwa family from multiple waves of attackers. Once the threat is neutralized, talk again with Nagahid’s cousin to learn about the recurring melody associated with each attack. They recommend visiting Saifukuji Temple to find musicians.
music
Saifukuji Temple is your next destination in a forested hill west of Obama. On your way, you may encounter a villager seeking help in reaching the temple. Supporting them is optional, but it gives you a small reward of 20 months.
In the temple, look for loquat players sitting under a tree overlooking the lake. He plays familiar songs and identifies its composer Takeda Motoaki. As lucky as he was, Motoaki was recently seen dealing with pirates. The fox is not masked.
The game calls this Sinbakhu a “fox” and “performer”, but it’s the same character between the dialogue and menu descriptions.
Performers
Return to Obama’s Hon’s Noodle Stand and meet Nagahid again. Before starting this mission, make sure you have sufficient stock in your rations and supplies. Once you agree to proceed, you will be trapped in this final mission.
Samemaru launches a sudden attack on the town, urging him to a fast-paced pursuit as Yasuke. They pursue and eliminate pirate leaders, but beware of unstoppable attacks.
After the battle, player control returns to NAOE. Use observation skills to highlight two objectives. One is east, the other is southeast. Both paths lead to the target. The southeastern route is slower, but easier, with it entailing women returning to the property without involving guards. On the eastern route, we see Nae interrogating the nobles who will give her the place, but calling many security guards to try and stop her.
Observe one last time to find a performer. Dialogue with his home notes to trigger a film exchange between the two characters. Fox is a somewhat sympathetic character, but regardless of your dialogue choice, the encounter will peak in a challenging boss battle.
Takeda Motoaki is equipped with a poisoned katana and employs several non-blockable moves. Beware of his kicks, which often starts a dangerous 4-strike combo. He is powerful, but nothing too fast. Take your time and keep your distance until you are ready for a strike. Kusarigama might be a good weapon option with that extra range. When Motoaki is defeated, he is treated to one last cutscene.
Defeating FOX will unlock multiple follow-up missions and rewards.
