The company’s future remains uncertain due to a decline in physical game sales.
GameStop, the largest video game retailer in the United States, is facing ongoing problems as more and more gamers move towards the future of digital storefronts.
With a new teaser revealed today, it appears that the retail chain has something big on the sleeve.
Yes, you read it correctly. Not only games that make fun of recent announcements, but even video game retailers are taking part in the law.
Teasing old school “something new”
The official X (formerly Twitter) account today releases a teaser in the form of a video in which retailers say “something new will come soon,” giving you a glimpse into what appears to be an old-school arcade.
I’m sure there are hidden clues I missed, so check them out below.
There are also follow-up tweets that direct users to the GameStop website where you can sign up for updates.
What exactly does this mean? Find me. Does GameStop hint that they have an old-fashioned arcade open? I don’t oppose that. Does GameStop buy the Dave & Buster’s Restaurant chain? Are all game stops converted to nostalgia places where people can play old arcade games? Certainly I can’t say it. If you’re interested in what it is, I sign up/
Formerly known as Babbages, GameStop was founded in 1984 before rebranding as GameStop in 1999. It quickly became a major powerhouse in the retail industry and became the number one video game retailer in the United States. At that peak, GameStop had over 6,000 retailers nationwide.
The popularity of online retailers and how more gaming companies are driving digital sales has led to a significant decline over time, but GameStop has more than 3,000 locations in the US as of February 2025.
In 2022, the company announced crypto tokens and NFT marketplaces, but I don’t think we’ve heard of this anymore.
Does this new GameStop gimmick work? For the employees of the company, I hope it does.
