Today, Epic Games announced that it was using artificial intelligence (AI) to bring the voice of the late James Earl Jones (with his real estate consent) to bring Darth Vader’s voice back to life in Fortnite.
This new addition sounds cool on paper, but who wouldn’t want to interact with Darth Vader? Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for gamers to say something very non-Veder-like with an AI-generated voice.

Players manage to curse Vader on social media, drop F bombs, and more. It’s surreal to watch, but that happened (via CNET).
The AI behind the voice answers the player. It sometimes goes in any direction… the player can even talk about the chest.
The fun is short-lived as Epic Games announced it had pushed Hotfix right away. I couldn’t trick AI into saying things because the epic seemed to tighten up the language filter.
Thankfully, players have made a vow by Dath Vader before they can put out the patch. For gamers whose kids play Fortnite, this should not be an issue. Parents should allow AI capabilities to allow voice and written communications of accounts related to minors to speak to Darth Vader.
Players may have missed the chance to hear Vader’s Oaths and more, but there are plenty of clips online, but they’re pale when compared to seeing them happen in the game.
In an announcement by Epic Games, the company posted a statement by the family of James Earl Jones. I also posted why I decided to use voices when portraying legendary characters in AI. “James Earl feels that Darth Vader’s voice is inseparable from the Star Wars story, and he has always hoped that fans of all ages would continue to experience it. We hope that both this iconic fan and a new generation of fans can share the joy of this iconic character,” the memo said.
