Gearbox has already confirmed that Borderlands 4 “has billions and accessories, but even on that scale. Studio boss Randy Pitchford has confirmed that the game has confirmed that players in the largest land area in franchise history can explore.
This was confirmed by Pitchford in Pax East, and brought back memories of Todd Howard, claiming about Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Borderlands 4’s World is seamless. If you can see it, you can go to it
Speaking on the Pax East 2025 panel (via Retbit), gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said Borderlands 4 was “due to the biggest universe we’ve built,” adding that it was “seamless” and “no loading time.”
Pitchford borrowed the page from Todd Howard’s playbook. When Bethesda was Skryim’s marketing, Howard argued that what players saw in the distance of Skryim was accessible from characters in the game, not just background. Pitchford made a similar claim for Borderlands 4.
Borderlands 4 is set on Kairos, a planet previously inaccessible in previous Borderlands games, and based on Pitchford’s claims, this will become the biggest game in franchise history.
On the same panel, Pitchford admitted he still doesn’t know the price of Borderlands 4. This is refreshing to see Mafia: The Old Country, a game from Borderlands Publisher 2K Games, released at a low price, and is refreshing to see in today’s gaming landscape.
What Pitchford knows is that Borderlands 4’s release date has risen and had nothing to do with Grand Theft Auto 6. This week became even more clear when Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of 2K games, confirmed that GTA 6 will be released on May 26, 2026.
Borderlands 4 will be released on September 12, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC.
