Sniper Elite and Zombie Army Developer Rebellion launched a new IP last month Nuclear, It’s a solid, weird new open world survival action title that firmly praises critical criticism and matches the number of players. Earlier this month, Rebellion announced that the game has surpassed 2 million players since its release, with the studio saying that the release of the day and dates on the PC and Xbox Game Pass has a big hand in its success.
Speaking to GamesIndustry, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley called Nuclear Game Pass launched a “big success” and is called a “really good deal” for both the UK studio and Microsoft.
“It was a huge success,” he said. “Microsoft is an incredible partner to work with and they have really leaned towards helping us. They brought our small projects to endure their skills and their scale.
Speaking specifically about how Microsoft’s subscription services helped games, Kingsley touched on the exposure the services offer to games, especially the new IP, and how they lower the barriers to entry.
“With Game Pass, you can get people to try it. And as a result of those people trying it, they like it. And they say to their peers on social media. “And some of them are in the Game Pass and they (play) it. But some of them are not in the Game Pass, so they’ll want to be part of that conversation. So they go and buy it.”
“At least, that’s our theory. We don’t have the data for that. But Chris (Kingsley, co-founder CTO) and I, one of the biggest challenges for a company like us, is discovery.
Kingsley added that the game pass will help “mitigate risk” to the studio. He admitted that launches on the service would likely be cannibalized sales, but according to the CEO of the Rebellion, the trade-offs were worth it.
“Yes, it reduces the risk because without giving details, they guarantee you a certain level of income, regardless of what it sells for,” he said. “But it has a potential knock-on effect. A place like an Xbox sale, for example. You could argue that all the hardcore is in the game pass. Are they cannibalizing one section of the audience, as they might buy a new IP like this?
