Following the acclaimed success of Frostpunk, its successor, Frostpunk 2, sold approximately 592,000 copies by the end of December 2024. In any case, the apocalyptic city builder exceeded widespread expectations, following its release date in 2024.
Despite the success of Frostpunk 2, developer 11-bit studio still appears to face many complex challenges. When you reach a similar score to the originals of platforms like OpenCritic, you look like a critic of the latest title.
In a recent financial report, Developer 11-Bit Studio said despite the release of a demo for Frostpunk 2 and the future title The Alters, their company is still facing “critical challenges” that plague the current financial situation.
As mentioned before, Frostpunk 2 has steadily sold nearly 600,000 copies in 2024. Also, the report states that “legacy titles such as Frostpunk and This War continue to perform strongly.”
However, according to the president of the management committee, Przemysław Marszał, “2024 has been a year marked by hard work, critical challenges and tough business decisions for us, and has also been a year of accomplishments that we are proud of.”
He later explains that he would pick up steam if he could continue his plans to monetize Frostpunk 2 with expansion and DLC, despite not reaching the financial goals he wanted in 2024. Marszał said, “We’ve also experienced failures, but I’m sure we’ve learned that.”
To recover some of the costs, the company appears to focus on what it describes as “close financially attractive opportunities.” This is probably another “project set in Frostpunk’s universe and is set to launch as early as 2027.”
That being said, between Frostpunk 2 DLC and future titles, the company’s recent success appears to focus on franchises. This makes us lack confidence considering the many delays in their upcoming title, The Alters.
Another interesting piece of information from the report is that “the market environment can deteriorate for the title genre.” This means that the current state of the gaming market may be the least suited to survival-focused city builders.
Nevertheless, with Frostpunk’s content growing and the sequel has had a decent success, we are excited to see what our team can offer us in the near future.
