- Sloclap’s rematch soccer game will be released as a $30 premium title that deviates from the F2P model.
- Tarno believes that good original games can be successful even if they can’t play them for free at affordable prices.
- The success of Helldivers 2 as a $30 premium game supports the idea that the original and solid games can flourish.
Most online-centric games these days are released as free to play (F2P) and rely on cosmetics, theme items and more to generate revenue, but not everyone is taking part in the business model for new releases.
Sloclap, the studio behind the successful Brawler Sifu, doesn’t believe that every game needs to succeed in F2P. The studio is applying this to Rematch, a soccer game that is currently in development.
Sloclap was not considered to be F2P in new games under development
Speaking to PC gamers during a recent studio visit, creative director Pierre Tarno said he didn’t think online gaming was free to achieve commercial success. They need good things.
Tarno added, “I never thought I could play for free,” adding, “One of the things I love about making games is that there is no secret formula or anything, but it’s actually the only way.
To further explain the studio’s perspective, Tarno doesn’t think he’ll release an online game that is not F2P in today’s climate.
“My point is, if you make a good enough game, it’s unique enough. If you say, ‘Oh, it’s a competitive online game and it should die upon arrival,’ then I don’t think it’s true.
While most people may disagree with Tarno’s logic, one game has proven that this idea works. Helldivers 2. The latest release of ArrowheadGame Studios is a $30 premium online game.
If you’re new to Rematch, it’s a big departure from Slocalp’s past titles, Absolver and Sifu, as it’s a fast 5v5 soccer game that focuses on arcade elements more than anything like EA Sports FC.
The rematch will be released on June 19th for $30 on PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC.
Does Sloclap find the same success as Helldivers 2? Being a sports game may prove to be a barrier to entry for some (non-sports fans), but it could also be accepted by the football community. If so, it establishes the base of the instant player. This is what all online games focus directly from Get-go.
