Bungie’s Marathon has been on the cross of another big first-person shooter franchise, as it not only revealed today’s gameplay, but also showed us the release date for the extract shooter.
As part of today’s marathon stream, Bungie discussed her latest project, the studio’s first game since Destiny 2. The studio has revealed that the marathon will be released on September 23rd on PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC.
The marathon is finally dated, and its first gameplay features a big departure from fate
In addition to the release date, Bungie confirmed that the game’s first closed alpha test will start later this month on April 23rd! Players can sign up via the Marathon Discord channel, but there is no guarantee that they will enter.
Interestingly, Sony marked the game’s release on September 23rd. This puts it on the same release date as Borderlands 4! The fourth mainline entry in the Gearbox series is also a first-person shooter, but not an extract shooter. Of course, I’m very suspicious unless the gearbox changes core gameplay.
Borderlands focuses on the booty with tons of weapons, crude humor, and a solid campaign that allows you to co-op with friends. Marathon, on the other hand, is a sci-fi PVP extraction game with booty as well, but it leans more towards Bungie’s stream-by-stream live service elements, which refer to “seasonal story updates.”
Will the marathon have as much of an impact as Destiny 2? Certainly I can’t say it. Released in 2017, Destiny 2 is one of the most successful live service Looter shooters to be released.
For those who are worried that the marathon is the destined Restkin, don’t worry. This is clearly another beast, and this should be the case. This is the studio’s first original game since 2017.
Will it be more successful than Borderlands 4? Now, that’s a big question to reflect on. Because the franchise has a built-in fanbase that is passionate about getting the latest franchise entries. How epic Concord of the epic failure was for Sony, all eyes become a marathon. Whether it can bring Bungee magic to the player, or whether this will become another live service bomb by Sony.
Marathon was released on PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC on September 23rd, and players on non-PlayStaton platforms are pleased to know that they don’t need to create a PlayStation account to play.
