After Square Enix launched its official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website, there is new excitement about the highly controversial Final Fantasy 9 remake.
The Japanese website focuses on the release date of Final Fantasy 9 (7 July 2000) and points out that the game will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year.
“We are looking forward to it as we prepare a variety of projects, including products and collaborations to celebrate our 25th anniversary!” the website continues.
That rather harmless statement and the presence of the anniversary website itself were enough to spark speculation that Square Enix might ultimately reveal what Final Fantasy 9 remake fans are desperately hoping for.
And the timing of the website launch will not be lost to fans who point out that Nintendo will be holding a Switch 2 focused Switch this week on April 2nd. Can Square Enix finally announce Final Fantasy 9 Remake for Switch 2 on Direct? That’s what some fans want.
Of course, this may not be all. The website itself mentioned products and collaborations, but “various projects” certainly shaking the tongue.
Last year, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida talked a bit about what the Final Fantasy 9 remake would look like.
“Of course, I know there will be requests for Final Fantasy 9, but when you think about Final Fantasy 9, it’s a hugely packed game,” Yoshi-P said. “When I think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to recreate it as a single title. That’s a difficult one. That’s a tough question.”
Yoshi-P appears to suggest that a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake could move in the direction of Final Fantasy 7 remake, which is in the middle of the planned trilogy.
In early 2024, Yoshi-P announced the Collector’s Edition’s Final Fantasy 9-themed extras and the digital collector’s edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion. DawnTrailIt includes Ark Summon from Final Fantasy 9 as Final Fantasy 14 Mount, and Princess Garnet Minion of the Winding (Duggar, aka one of the main characters in Final Fantasy 9). If I pre-ordered the DawnTrail, I got a rolled-up Zidane Minion. Zidane is the main character of Final Fantasy 9.

Rumors about the Final Fantasy 9 remake have been swirling around Square Enix since the unannounced game appeared as part of 2021 nvidia leak For upcoming titles. The list, legalized by Nvidia but potentially outdated, includes many Square Enix games that the company has announced or released. Chrono Cross Remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4and of course Final Fantasy 7 Remake For PC. However, the remake of Final Fantasy 9 and the tactics of Final Fantasy are both on the game’s leak list, but they haven’t yet come to fruition. A few months before Nvidia leaked in June 2021, It has been reported that Final Fantasy 9 anime series is in developmentalthough we haven’t heard anything about it since.
