Mojang Rules Out Minecraft 2: 'Do You Think We’re Going to Have an Earth 2?'

Minecraft celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, and despite growing into a nasty teen year, developer Mojang doesn’t seem to be planning on replacing it with a sequel.

On a recent trip to the Stockholm studio, Passthecontroller asked about the possibility of the best-selling game of all time, winning a sequel. Ingela Garneij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, had an interesting, yet pointed answer for us.

Minecraft 2.0 is clearly not on the horizon, but that doesn’t mean that the phenomenon of survival does not continue to evolve. In fact, the plan extends to the future, with the goal of at least double the current lifespan.

“We’ve been around for 15 years,” Garneij said. “We want to be around for at least 15 years, so actually Agnes (Larson, game director at Minnecraft Vanilla) and I work as a team.

This is an ambition driven by Mojang’s desire to innovate, continue his mining and crafts, and innovate new ideas about their solid foundations, so to speak. However, these foundations are beginning to show their age, but Garneij acknowledges that there are no plans for an engine overhaul, but this means new content, such as the newly revealed Vibrant Visuals Graphics Update, will take time to put into practice.

“I think age in the game is a challenge,” Garnizi said. “It’s a 15-year-old platform, a 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So the other new games have a new engine and can run really fast.

Nevertheless, Minecraft continues to be one of the most popular games in the world and, as far as we know, shows no signs of slowing down. Also, there are no plans to play Minecraft for free or use generative AI technology. Don’t expect to play Minecraft 2 in the near future. Anyway, it’s not on this planet.
