Warhammer 40,000: The surprising announcement that Space Marine 3 is in official development and is occurring just six months after the record-breaking release of Space Marine 2 has thrilled fans. Now, the dust settles in the news, and the thoughts inevitably turn to where the heroic Demetrian Titus heads next in his third video game adventure.
caveat! Warhammer 40,000 spoilers: Space Marine 2 continues.
Before we can speculate about the possibility that Space Marine 3 has in-store, let’s briefly sum up the events of Space Marine 2.
Space Marine 2 sees Ultramarine’s Titus stand up against Tyranid and the Thousand Sons’ traitor Legion, a massive battle with the Devil’s army and even a trip to the Warp. With the help of Master Marnus Calger of Ultramarine’s branch, Titus manages to dodge both enemy factions before sending out a mysterious mission to tease the story’s continuation in the sequel.
Now, to speculation. Space Marine 3 is certainly showing that with some capacity, it features the Necrons, Warhammer 40,000 death-free skeletal robot Xenos. One Space Marine 2 mission, which collects Titus deep into the intestines of an alien planet, shows markings of old and mysterious walls, a clear nod to the Necron.
There is also DataSlate (Audiolog for Space Marine 2) that reveals that Necron’s structure is killing TechPriests. You can see these structures lying around their location.
In fact, during the third act of the campaign, Titus heads out into the world of Necron’s graves, packed with Necron buildings and technology. Some players thought that Xenos would make a surprising appearance as the third enemy faction in the campaign given the nature of the mission. Alas, they didn’t.
Can other enemy factions also appear in Space Marine 3? Space Marine 2 does not reveal the nature of Titus’ secret new missions (Amazon’s Secret Level Anthology’s Warhammer 40,000 animation will serve as a sequel to Space Marine 2, but reveals nothing), but forever suspicious pastor Leandros has Chids of Corulsion.
At this point it’s worth going back to my exclusive Passthecontroller interview with Tim Willits, the Chief Creative Officer of Saber Interactive. At the time, Willit said it could be a story DLC and revealed that the idea for Space Marine 3 was already in the air.
In the interview, Willit will tease Space Marine 3 and introduces new enemy factions. “There are so many factions…” he teased. “There are other chapters too. That’s interesting…”
Other chapters, huh? Can Titus leave Ultramarine behind and join another chapter in his Space Marine 3 adventure? If so, at this point it is almost impossible to say which chapters will cut. Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Salamanders are one of the most popular Space Marine chapters outside of the Poster Boys’ Ultramarine, but they actually have a long list. Perhaps at some point, can we join forces with the towering castode of Adeptus?
And what about the enemy chaos to fight? It’s a shame to go back to the battle with the Thousand Sons who did this in Space Marine 2. Or Death Guard? Or the emperor’s children? They’re a loud bunch and keep the party going.
On the other hand, what kind of gameplay do you get from Space Marine 3? Games Workshop, Publisher Focus Entertainment, and developer Saber Interactive have not spoken much at this point, but there’s talk about “presenting an even more spectacular, massive battle.”
To me, it means gameplay of the vehicle. Some people wanted to see it from Space Marine 2. S? Land speeder? Land Raider? A assault bike? With increased scale, the pieces in the set piloting thunderstorms during ground attacks are actually epic.
As for the characters, Space Marine 2 features the aforementioned Ultramarine Chapter Master Marneus Calgar. Can Space Marine 3 do one well and include Ultramarine’s Primarch Robute Guilliman herself? In the current settings, Dark Angles Primarch Lion El’jonson is also knocking on the galaxy. Perhaps we’ll come across him.
Behind the scenes are many famous traitor primates who are now terrorizing the empire in the form of demons. Maybe one of them will make a cameo (fingers crossed for the maltarion!).
No matter what the game workshop and Saber Interactive are, it doesn’t seem to be clear for a while. The game workshop said Space Marine 3″ could be years away from its release.”
