summary
- Split Fiction sets the record for EA’s highest concurrent player, winning premium games at 254,756.
- The game’s unique friend pass feature allows for cooperative play and could increase the number of players.
- Though it’s not free to play like Apex Legends, the success of split fiction suggests the powerful commercial potential of EA.
Just a few days ago, I reported that Hazelite’s split fiction had become the first electronic arts publishing game to average 90 over a decade.
It’s impressive enough, but split fiction was able to create history for EA that failed to achieve large multiplayer franchises such as Titanfall, Battlefield, and more.
Split Fiction has records of most simultaneous players in premium games
As of March 8th, Split Fiction is the only record holder for EA’s best simultaneous player count for Premium (Le.Pay) games!
On SteamDB, the game is listed as reaching its peak where 254,756 gamers are playing simultaneously. This is not even considered in the console number. This should at least be equivalent to anything more.
Released in 2018, Dice’s Battlefield V was the former record holder for the highest simultaneous player count of premium games by EA. At its peak there were 116,000 simultaneous players in steam. This was a time when cross-play was not even a thing, so if you decide to buy a game to compete, even if cross-platform games are on different platforms, who knows how expensive it will be.
As for the best player count of any EA game, it was able to collect a total of 624,473 simultaneous players, so it is the free-to-play battle archer of the current king Apex Royale Shooter, Apex Legends, Apawn Entertainment. Of course, the free-to-play games were a great help.
The numbers are impressive, but that doesn’t mean that over 250,000 people have purchased the game on Steam. Split Fiction features a friend’s pass, like Hazelght Games of the past. This allows one game owner to share the game with a friend. This is because you can only play the game cooperatively.
Although not specified, bet that the number includes people logged in via a friend’s pass. That being said, even if you half it, it’s over 120,000 people who bought it. And this is not considered in console players.
Hopefully, EA will soon release the game’s sales milestone, so we can see if it’s a financial success. If past Hazelight Studios titles are any indication, this should be another commercial success for EA and game developers.
If you haven’t checked out the game yet, check out the reviews to see why you’d probably want to make a change as soon as possible. “Continuously filled with excitement, beauty, joy and total absurdity, this title has taken its place alongside its spiritual predecessor as perhaps the best two-person experience on hardware today,” the review states as part of the game’s 9/10 score.
