While most JRPG meat and potatoes are in combat and story situations, that doesn’t mean you have to just walk and get to everything.
In particular, in JRPGs with larger, wider open maps, you’re definitely paying to have another way of crossing to help you circle faster and stay involved in the game over a longer, quiet period.
Various JRPGs use different types of mechanisms and vehicles to quickly and impressively travel from point A to point B. These include some kind of hoverboard, ride comfort, or even a giant transforming robot.
If you absolutely need to trek through large, almost empty spaces, you can do worse than doing it in one of these ways.
10 Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Magic Parkour
From the beginning of the series, all subsequent Kingdom Hearts games gradually expanded the role of traversal and mobility. Starting with a simple glide in the first game, the combination of faster glide and air dodge in the second game has brought things to the next level.
With the introduction of FlowMotion, a magically enhanced jump, slide and free-running subsystem, things really came to mind in Kingdom Hearts 3D. Simply dodging walls or solid objects, Sora and Riku can fly in almost any direction at high speed.
You can also bounce off the wall, slide the rail up and down, or flip it over from the pole. Not only that, flow motion movement can be taken to powerful AOE attacks. This is best when all other commands are in cooldown.
9 The Story of Serralt
Geoboardin’
Older entries in the Tales series include a considerable portion of Overworld’s cross-cutting mechanics, such as boats and airships, but did not interfere with field and dungeon trips. After all, they were pretty sloppy range so there was no real reason to have them.
But in Berseria of the story, there is a faster way: Geoboard. This strange rock slab can ride like a surfboard thanks to the natural forces of Earth’s pulse. Not only is it much faster than walking, it can also be used to instantly defeat weak enemies.
Interestingly, according to Skit, the Geoboard draws its power from his companion, Malak, Bienhu, in this case. Ergo is a fast and easy way of travel for velvet and the company, but for Bienhu, every use of a geoboard is like running a marathon.
8 Dragon Quest XI
Viewfinder Keeper
It can almost be agreed that one of the biggest selling points of Dragon Quest games is its unique monster design. Then, the best way to make the extra mechanics attractive is to tie it to those monsters.
Therefore, Dragon Quest XI has a monster mount. After defeating a particular monster, they may leave cars and animals behind. It can be adopted for your own cross-sectional needs. These include the Skullrider six-legged Lenavent, the headless rider horse, and even the entire mechanical body of the egg skeleton.
Various mounts, such as jumping, climbing, and skiing, have different abilities, which can help you find nifty treasures. The only rule is that you cannot take them beyond the area you find.
7 Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Supernatural rail grinding
In the original version of Shin Megami Tensei V, Traversal was neat and fun and convenient thanks to Nahobino’s inherent speed and agility. Still, these maps were pretty big and it wasn’t always convenient to run manually here and there.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance dealt with this hiccup with the introduction of demonic coils that sprouted from the ground for you to grind. These rails help connect two specific points on the map. This makes for a very useful shortcut.
Some Magatsrails are intended only to avoid you faster, but others can help you connect you to a secret territory that is not otherwise accessible. Even for commercial purposes, you should always ride the rails when you look at them, simply for fun.
6 Pokemon Sun & Moon
Any way to ride a Pokemon
Since the first game of the series, we have been riding Pokemon. Thanks to movements like Fly and Surf, they’ve always got us where we need to go, but walking isn’t particularly different.
The first Pokemon games that went a little further in concept were Sun & Moon and the Ride Pokemon System. At any time, you can call one of several Pork rides, unlike summoning Pokemon specially trained to your location.
All Ride Pokemon deal with a wide variety of obstacles. There are more specialized Pokemon like Maddale, where something normal like Laplar, to carry you on water, and to carry you on rocky terrain and rocky cliffs. There is also a jet-driven Sharpdo that allows you to swim faster and smash rocks.
“He’s on the sword, mom!”
Shortly after the hero arrived at the big corporation in metaphor, Rifantasio remembers that the prince’s enchanting sword turned into a holster on his waist. At Galica’s suggestion, he decided that the best use of this magical artifact was to ride it like a skateboard.
Whenever you are in a metaphor town or city, you can start whipping and cruising flying swords. Unfortunately, it cannot be used in dungeons, but it can easily avoid big cities like big companies and looks cool.
But what’s really interesting about The Flying Sword is that if you’re on it, accidental NPC dialogue changes. When you fly, the townspeople speak with adoration, confusion and concern about this random Elda boy who tears the city with a magical sword.
4 Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Surfing those streets
Compared to when Segways first became a thing, individual weight-based transport has become much more common, let alone affordable. Apparently, it’s very affordable so they just pass them on to random Hawaiian tourists.
Dragon: Infinite Wealth, a coincidence with Haggard Inventor, Infinite Wealth unlocks Street Surfer.
It’s faster than walking in nature, but it also has an automatic cruise feature that automatically transports to pinned spots on the map.
You can also customize your street surfer with a variety of paint jobs and wheels. Of course, it’s not cheap to buy all of these customizations, let alone charging the battery. Maybe getting this for free isn’t that much of a blessing after all…
3 Final Fantasy 7 Play
You can already hear the song
Chocobo riding has been a flagship element of the Final Fantasy series since its early days, providing a fast and convenient means, and is always accompanied by the theme song earworm.
Recent Final Fantasy games have fleshed out chocobo as well as “fast walking”. This is what is most commonly seen in Final Fantasy 7 playback.
In replay, Cloud and Company summon Chocobo Mounts from anywhere on the field, spinning a little faster. However, to summon a chocobo, you must first tame a local wild chocobo for that particular area. It’s a bit of a chore, but it makes your feathered friends appreciate more.
Not only can chocobos patrol you, but almost every local chocobo has a special crossing ability. For example, in Junon, chocobos can climb onto thin rock surfaces, while in Cosmo Canyon, chocobos can slide through the air.
2 Rune Factory 4
Hitch to ride your monster
One of the main mechanics in Rune Factory 4 is tame and peel off monsters. Almost every random monster can make friends with gifts and increase your love for you.
If the monsters like you, they will give you a ride almost anywhere. Small monsters won’t suit you, but other monsters of sufficient size can ride them. Both move faster and use certain unique attack abilities.
Interestingly, this can lead to fun and strange riding situations as all the monsters take you over themselves. For example, if you tame a Pomme Pomme, you will sit on your head while it rolls on the ground.
1 Xenoblade Chronicles x
Transformation robots make everything better
It is an indisputable scientific fact that everything is objectively superior by including giant robots. Please check it out. The giant robot called Skells is the central theme of Xenoblade Chronicles X. This is great, but there are ways to make them a little more fantastic.
All Skell models have their own alternative vehicle modes, allowing you to enter and exit the field if you want to travel a little faster. Depending on the weight and size of the skele you are using, the vehicle that changes slightly will vary.
Light skeles like Formula and Verus transform into giant motorcycles, while heavier skeles like Mastema and Amdosi turn into meat tanks. Whichever scale you use, you just have to flip the mode on the go and I’m very pleased. It’s really like a big fidget toy.
